JNU Admission 2009 full-time Program and part time program through Entrance Examination | Last date to apply - March 16, 2009 | jnu.ac.in

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi invites applications for admission to the various full-time Programs for 2009.

Admissions are offered under four categories

Category A- Admission through Entrance Examination

The Entrance Examination for admission to various full-time programmes of study will be held on May 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2009 at Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Allahabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhubaneshwar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Delhi, Gangtok, Guwahati, Goa, Gorakhpur, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Katihar, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Pant Nagar, Patna, Pondicherry, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Secunderabad (A.P.), Shillong, Shimla, Silchar, Siliguri (Distt. Jalpaiguri), Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur, Varanasi, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. In addition, the University will hold entrance examination at Kathmandu (Nepal).

III. School of Social Sciences

Experimental areas include Complex Fluids, Supra-molecular Chemistry, Materials Science, Superconductivity, Magnetism, Nonlinear Optics, Semiconductors, Polymers and Nanoparticle Physics, and Ultrafast Photophysical Processes in Bio and Nano-materials.

(ii) M.Sc. in Physics

VIII. School of Arts & Aesthetics

(i) M.Phil./Ph.D.: The School offers M.Phil./Ph.D. programme in three different streams - Visual Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies and Cinema Studies. (Admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D. is through a separate entrance examination for each discipline followed by a viva-voce.)

(ii) M.A. in Arts & Aesthetics: The School offers M.A. programme with cross disciplinary study of the Visual, Cinematic and Performing Arts.

IX. School of Information Technology

Category-B : Direct Admissions to Ph.D. Programme

Limited numbers of candidates are admitted directly to Ph.D. programme on the basis of their performance in viva voce examination both in Monsoon and Winter Semesters. Candidates may refer to the admission announcement being notified separately.

Category-C : Admission of JRF holders to M.Phil/Ph.D. and Pre-Ph.D/Ph.D Programme in Science Schools

Limited number of candidates are admitted to M.Phil./Ph.D. and Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D. programmes who have qualified a National Test entitling them to a JRF in Schools of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Computer & Systems Sciences, Information Technology and Biotechnology.

Category-D : Part-Time Programmes

An Entrance Examination will be held in Delhi only for admission to Certificate of Proficiency and Advanced Diploma in Mass Media in Urdu one-year Part-Time Programmes of Study in the School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies, intended for candidates residing in Delhi NCR only. Admission to Diploma of Proficiency and Advanced Diploma of Proficiency will be made on basis of the past academic record of the candidate which will be assessed in accordance with the criteria laid down by the University for selection.

Programme of Study : (i) Advanced Diploma in Mass Media in Urdu (ii) Advanced Diploma of Proficiency in Pushto (iii) Diploma of Proficiency in Pushto and Bahasa Indonesia (iv) Certificate of Proficiency in Italian, Mongolian, Pustho, Bahasa Indonesia and Urdu.

Candidates who are due to appear in respective qualifying examination prescribed for eligibility for admission to a particular programme are also eligible to appear for the entrance examination, their admission being subject to the results of the qualifying examination being declared before 14th August, 2009 and their fulfilling the minimum eligibility requirements as prescribed.

Foreign nationals present in India are required to appear in the Entrance Examination subject to their fulfilling minimum eligibility requirements as prescribed for Indian students as indicated under Category ‘A’ above. However, in the event of their selection, they will be considered for admission subject to equivalence of their degrees as per eligibility requirements.

Up to 22.5 per cent (15% for SC and 7.5% for ST) of seats are reserved for SC/ST candidates respectively in all programmes of study. 3% seats are reserved for Physically Challenged (Handicapped) candidates having a minimum of 40% disability, in each category (General/SC/ST/OBC). All SC/ST/Physically Challenged (Handicapped) candidates who have passed and/or are appearing in the qualifying examination are eligible to appear in the entrance examination irrespective of their percentage of marks. 27% seats are reserved for OBC candidates (non creamy layer) subject to availability of sufficient infrastructure.

Besides, all candidates who have passed qualifying examination prescribed for admission to the concerned programme of study from the identified backward districts will be eligible for deprivation points. All Kashmiri migrants and wards/widows of certain categories of Defence Personnel will be eligible for deprivation points subject to their submitting a documentary evidence of their status. Details are given in Chapter V of Prospectus. All female candidates are also eligible for deprivation points. Only those candidates will be eligible for deprivation points as stated above who seek admission through Entrance Examination.

There is a different Application Form for each Category i.e. Category ‘A’ and Category ‘D’ (Admission through Entrance Examination), Category ‘B’ (Direct Admission to Ph.D. programmes) and Category ‘C’ (Admission of JRF holders).

For admission through Entrance Examination under Category-A and Certificate of Proficiency (Part-Time Programme) under Category-D, candidates can opt up to a maximum of three Fields of Study in a single Application Form for the same level of Programmes i.e. COP (Part-Time) or B.A. (Hons.) (1st Year) or M.A./M.Sc./MCA or M.Phil/Ph.D.,Pre- Ph.D./Ph.D.,M.Tech./Ph.D.,M.P.H./Ph.D., and are not required to submit separate Application Forms. In case a candidate submits more than one Application Form for the same level of programmes of study, his/her candidature will be rejected. However, this restriction will not apply to candidates who apply for Direct Admission to Ph.D. programme under Category-B, JRF holders to M.Phil./Ph.D. and Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D. programmes under Category-C and Diploma/Advanced Diploma of Proficiency (Part-Time Programmes) under Category-D. Candidates are required to submit separate Application Form for each Field of Study for admission to B.A. (Hons.) 2nd Year under category A above, Direct Admision to Ph.D. programme under Category-B above, JRF holders to M.Phil/Ph.D. and Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D. under Category-C above and for Diploma and Advanced Diploma (Part-Time) programmes under Category-D above.

Sets of Application Form and Prospectus can be obtained in person, from the Counter in the Administrative Block of the University till 16.3.2009, on payment of Rs. 200/- in cash per set from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on all working days (Monday to Friday).

They can also be obtained by Post till March 6, from the Deputy Registrar (Admissions), Room No. 28, Administrative Block, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi-110067, by sending crossed Bank Draft (valid for six months) for Rs. 300/- drawn in favour of ‘Jawaharlal Nehru University’ payable at New Delhi along with a self-addressed (unstamped) envelope of minimum size of 30 cms X 25 cms, clearly indicating the Category for which the Application Form is required on the self-addressed envelope.

Candidates seeking Application Form and Prospectus from Nepal are required to send a Bank Draft of Indian Rs.400/- or equivalent in US Dollars.

Last date for receipt of completed application forms is March 16, 2009.

Jawaharlal Nehru University

has decided to hold the entrance examination for admission to its various full-time programmes
from May 15-18. The combined entrance exam for admission to MSc Biotechnology will also be held during the same time on behalf of 33 universities at 78 centres in the country and at Kathmandu.

Application forms and prospectus will be available from February 2 at the administrative block of the university. The application forms can also be obtained through post by writing to Deputy Registrar (Admissions), Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi 110067. The last date for issue and submission of completed forms is March 16.

Courses, Mode of teaching and Mode of evaluation, Curriculum updation

JNU is innovative with regard to its academic structure, and the revision of curricula is a continuous and ongoing process. The revision is initiated by individual faculty member(s) depending on requirements with a view to keeping pace with the changing needs.

Keeping the spirit of the interdisciplinary character of the University, the courses are structured in such a way that in addition to the prescribed compulsory courses in the discipline concerned, the students are encouraged to opt for optional courses from other Centres/Schools to benefit from the faculty of other Centres/Schools. Unless a student obtains prescribed grades and credits in optional courses, he/she will not be qualified for award of degree.

The University follows semester system. Each course is for the duration of one semester and it is assigned a specific number of credits. The number of credits to be assigned to a course are determined by Board of School on the recommendation of the Centre concerned. Evaluation is done by the concerned course teacher with the exception of M. Phil dissertation and Ph. D. thesis. University follows a continuous evaluation system. Each course has a number of credits with prescribed contact hours.

Note :

1. You can opt for appearing in the Entrance Examination upto a maximum of three fields of study of your choice for the same level of programmes to be indicated in the same Application Form in order of preference for admission.

2. If you submit more than one Application Form for the same level of programme, all your Application Forms shall be summarily rejected. However, this restriction will not apply to (i) those JRF holder candidates who apply for admission in Science Schools under "JRF category" for admission to M.Phil./Ph.D. or Pre-Ph.D/Ph.D. through viva-voce examination in addition to admission through entrance examination; and (ii) candidates who apply for direct admission to Ph.D. programme.

3. Application Forms can be submitted by post to Deputy Registrar (Admissions), Room No.28, Administrative Block, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi - 110067 or dropped in the Box in the Administrative Block of the University. Do not send your application form through private courier services. The application forms must reach the JNU on or before March 16, 2009. JNU will not accept responsibility for any postal delay or irregularity or loss in postal transit.

Pharma, Chemical Technology, OR M.Sc. in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biophysics, Microbial Genetics and Bioinformatics. (Also B.Tech/B.E in Electrochemistry, Bioengineering and M.Sc. in Chemistry & Physics in case of Anna University; M.Sc in Marine Biotechnology, Marine Biology/Aquatic Biology & Fisheries, Environmental Biotechnology in case of Cochin University of Science and Technology and M.Sc. in Bioengineering in case of West Bengal University of Technology).

IMPORTANT NOTE: (for candidates of all categories) Only those candidates who have passed the qualifying examinations in 2007 or thereafter (including those who are appearing in 2009) are eligible to apply. In other words, those who have passed the qualifying examination PRIOR TO 2007 are not eligible to apply for taking admission to any of the programme i.e., (1) M.Sc. (Biotechnology); (2) M.Sc.Agri./M.V.Sc(Biotechnology) and (3) M.Tech (Biotechnology).



Reservation/Concession :

a) Reservation: 15%, 7½% and 3% of seats shall be reserved for SC, ST and Physically Challenged (Handicapped) (PH) candidates respectively. All the SC/ST and PH candidates who have passed the qualifying examination are eligible to apply irrespective of their percentage of marks in the qualifying degree examination. OBC reservation, wherever applicable, will be implemented as per the policy of each participating University.

b) Concession for Kashmiri Migrants: 10% marks will be added to the overall marks scored by a Kashmiri Migrant candidate in the entrance examination. After adding 10% marks, in case he/she is covered in the cut-off point in the merit list, he/she will be offered admission strictly in accordance with his/her inter-se merit alongwith other candidates subject to his/her meeting the minimum prescribed eligibility requirements and also subject to his/her producing valid registration documents issued by the notified authorities certifying the candidate's Kashmiri Migrant status.

Tuition Fee/ Scholarship:

Fee shall be charged from the admitted candidates as per the fee structure of the concerned University. Candidates selected for admission to those of the participating Universities, which are supported by the Department of Biotechnology (Govt. of India), are generally eligible for scholarship at the rates prescribed by the Dept. of Biotechnology.

Candidates may please note that the M.Sc. Biotechnology programme being offered at Punjabi University, Patiala and Thapar University, Patiala, is currently not being financially supported by the Department of Biotechnology. Therefore, the award of scholarships, if any, shall be governed by the rules prevailing in these Universities. Students admitted to Gulbarga University will not get any scholarship.

In Person:
Sets of Application Form and Prospectus can be obtained personally on cash payment of Rs.200/- per set from any of the participating University as shown above.


By Post: Those willing to get the Application Form by post should send their request only to the Deputy Registrar (Admissions), Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi-110067, alongwith a Bank Draft (valid for six months) of Rs.260/-(for one set of Application Form and Prospectus). The Bank Draft should be drawn in favour of "Jawaharlal Nehru University" payable at New Delhi. The request should accompany a self-addressed unstamped envelope of the size of 28x20 cms. indicating clearly on the top of the self addressed envelope the programme for which Application Form is required, i.e., "M.Sc. Biotechnology" OR "M.Sc.(Agri.)/M.V.Sc. Biotechnology" OR "M.Tech. Biotechnology". Please do not send your request through private courier services.
